MALACHY UGWUMMADU, ESQ

Barrister Malachy Ugwummadu graduated from the Faculty of Law, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) and was called to the Nigerian Bar in May 2002. He is the Managing Partner of the Malachy chambers with their corporate Head office in Surulere, Lagos State.

A legal practitioner of over two decades post-call. An integral member of the human rights, pro-democracy community in Nigeria since the days of his undergraduate studies at the University of Nigeria. The former National Deputy General Secretary of the Joint Action Congress of Nigeria (JACON), a formidable umbrella pro-democracy group that fought against military rule in Nigeria ably led by Late Chief Gani Fawehinmi (1997 to 1999).

A senior research officer at the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR); two-term General Secretary of the CDHR (2005 2009) and eventually two term National President of the same organization (CDHR) (2015 2019). A member of the Governing Board of some rights and advocacy groups in Nigeria. Professional consultant, public intellectual and analyst on Political and legal issues by most Nigerian leading media houses. Counsel and external solicitors to a few tertiary institutions and multiple corporate entities in Nigeria. A resource person to leading labour, trade union and pro-democracy organizations and institutions in Nigeria. Legal Advisor of the Movement for the Liberation of Western Sahara, an advocacy and self-determination group co-founded by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Academic Staff Union of the Universities (ASUU). The Current Alternate Chair of the Citizen’s Liberty Committee of the Nigeria Bar Association, 2024.
